Coquina Key, known as The Friendly Island, is a residential island community on historic Tampa Bay; its history dates back to the late 1800s. The Island is located approximately two and a half miles to the south east of Downtown St. Petersburg via 4th Street S and is easily accessed via two bridges: one at 39th Avenue SE, and the other at 45th Avenue SE.
Community living is made up of affordable single-family homes and beautiful waterfront properties, many with deep water access. Two large, well-managed condominium complexes also offer affordable home options to residents.
For convenience, the Island has a seven-eleven located on Elkcam Blvd SE. Additional shopping is located at Coquina Key Plaza (just two blocks away from the southern bridge), Downtown St. Pete, and also at the Skyway plaza on 62nd Ave and 9th St. S.
Although there are no restaurants on the Island, many of the Islanders venture off the island and down to some of the local hangouts on 6th and 4th St. S.
Just over the 39th St. bridge to 6th, you'll find Munch's Restaurant est. 1954. Here, you can order yourself a great home-cooked breakfast or lunch for a reasonable price and receive good old fashion service.
Heading north up 6th S. you'll find yourself at Casey's Irish Pub. It's a great little place to stop in and have a pint or two and enjoy a laugh with the locals.
A little ways further north on 6th you'll find that it turns into 4th St. S, and there on the corner of 22 Ave and 4th St. S. you'll find the Chattaway Drive-In. Chattaway's, Like Munch's, has been around since the 1950s, and provides great launches and dinners. In addition to dining, you can have an ale or two and listen to some great live evening entertainment ranging from classical jazz, guitar playing and also some great vocals from local bands and solo artists out on the courtyard.
Coquina Key Park is a spacious well-maintained city park is located on the Island next to Big Bayou. It offers Islanders access to two lighted soccer fields, four lighted tennis courts, a basketball court, a fitness course, children's playground, a dog park, fishing dock and a scenic view of the bayou.
The Islanders have established many social groups/clubs in Coquina Key's community. These groups include a garden club, cruising club, swimming club and a well-established neighborhood association.
The Coquina Key Neighborhood Association is an active group of Islanders that are active involved in maintaining and improving their local community.
Made up of local Islanders, the association organizes events including island cleanups, community garage sales, pool parties and neighborhood block parties just to name a few.
The association meets the first Tuesday of each month at the Coquina Key Community Center and Club House to discuss/resolve issues impacting the island and Islanders and also to plan out events. Additionally, guest speakers ranging from local counsel men, police officers, town planning and code enforcement officials will usually attend to speak at the meetings to help inform the Islanders of current issues that are or may impact their lifestyle.
